Centrally
located for touring the Snowdonia National Park and the
Llyn peninsula, Wenallt is near the centre of Penrhyndeudraeth
village but elevated enough to enjoy views towards the Dwyryd estuary
and the Rhinog mountains behind Harlech.
Wenallt is less than 2 miles/3km from the Italianate fantasy village and
gardens of Portmeirion, setting for the cult 60s TV series
The Prisoner. The world-famous Ffestiniog narrow-gauge
steam railway also runs near the house, with its Penrhyn Station
just a few minutes’ walk away. For garden lovers, the little-known
Plas Brondanw, created by Clough Williams-Ellis of Portmeirion
fame, is 2 miles/3km away. Ospreys have returned to the
area to breed and the RSPB's information and viewing area (free entry)
is nearby at Pont Croesor (2 miles/3km). From June 2010 it will be possible
to board the recently extended Welsh Highland narrow gauge steam
railway at Pont Croesor to Beddgelert and Caernarfon.
Penrhyndeudraeth is a large village in the scenic Vale
of Ffestiniog with good local services including a Post Office/newsagent,
free-to-use cashpoint, chemist, doctor's surgery, café, excellent
Indian Restaurant, two pubs, a convenience store, good public transport
links with a main line railway station (on the Shrewsbury to Pwllheli
route) buses, and the Ffestiniog railway all within walking distance.
Porthmadog, our nearest town, (3 miles/5km) has shops,
restaurants and cafés and a Tourist Information Centre. The pretty
mountain village of Beddgelert is 7 miles/11km, castles
and beaches at Harlech and Criccieth
both 8 miles/13km. A little further afield are Bodnant Garden,
Penrhyn Castle and Plas Newydd (all NT), slate
caverns and museums at Llechwedd and Llanberis
and Mount Snowdon itself.
Walkers and cyclists are welcome. For those exploring the area by bicycle
we have a lockable bike shed. Undercover car parking is available for
our guests, also ideal if you are touring by motorcycle.
